What Is PKT?
Precision Ketogenic Therapy (PKT) is today’s precision medicine approach to the use of food as medicine. Advances in food science, analytical chemistry, computer science, and medicine allow us to provide food as medicine that meets today’s precision medicine criteria. People receiving PKT differ widely in nutritional needs, food preferences, and pathologies. During treatment, symptoms change, nutritional needs change, and the individual’s feeding abilities may change. The initial PKT Diet Prescription needs to be carefully personalized and continuously adapted to the individual’s changing needs. Although the symptoms that cause a person to consider PKT are usually seizures, the person is often experiencing other symptoms that may be due to the disease or side effects of treatment for the disease. PKT is the use of nutrients to change metabolism in all of the body. Thus, a holistic approach to monitoring the outcome of PKT is needed to both optimize and personalize it
This approach uses food as a treatment. Just like with medicine where there are multiple kinds of prescriptions to treat different people with the same symptoms, there should be different food ratios for each patient. The precision allows for us to calculate the exact amount of fats to proteins to carbohydrates that leads to the best outcome for our patients. In some cases, this has allowed patients to reduce the medications they were on and reduced symptoms for those who could not take medication. To see more about these patients stories, checkout the PKT Heroes page
Please keep in mind this is a therapy, not diet. If the outcome you are looking for is weight loss, this is not the right option for you. PKT's main goal is to help alleviate symptoms of epilepsy through a person's food intake. We try to work with the patients and/or their caregiver to find the right balance of nutrients PKT has helped those of all ages with a variety of intensity in symptoms. We have a cookbook available here: --link-- However this is a generalization of what the ratios would look like. Each person would get their own cookbook and will work closely with a team to fine tune the specialized ratios. It is important to us that not only does the food work to help symptoms, but also looks and tastes good. So we have created a variety of food that you will hopefully enjoy

The Borum lab searches for answers when people have chronic symptoms with no adequate treatments. Understanding how components of dietary intake influence health and disease can often contribute to those answers. Altering dietary components or the ratio of them to each other is a current research effort to improve symptoms and promote health.
