What is Food = Medicine?

Food = Medicine refers to the research that correlates the effects of food on our health and wellbeing. When thinking of food as a prescription rather than just a diet, it can be used to both help manage pre-existing health conditions and prevent future ailments.

A classic example of prevention are vitamins. By making sure you have vitamin C in your diet

from fruits and vegetables, you prevent scurvy.

For helping pre-existing conditions, a good example are the “heart-healthy” food category

(vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and beans) for cardiovascular health.

Though, it isn’t just important to understand the overall idea of Food = Medicine, but also the parts that it contains. FPM, FIM, and FAPM are the pillars that make up Food = Medicine. See brief overview of each below and select “Learn More” to go more in depth into the concepts.

FPM

FPM (Food Produced for Medicine) focuses on the agricultural side. This includes farmers, ___, and ____; Anyone who produces the food we eat. The preventive and therapeutic nutrition depend on Food Produced for Medicine (FPM) with documented healthy nutrient profiles.

FIM

From “Let Food Be Thy Medicine” in 400 BC to today’s noncommunicable diseases linked to poor diet, healthy food is a critical component of preventative medicine’s Food Is Medicine (FIM).

FAPM

Precision therapeutic medicine requires using Food As Precision Medicine (FAPM) which extends many aspects of FIM to precision medicine. Precision Ketogenic Therapy is the FAPM exemplar we will use on this website

Backed by the University of Florida

The University of Florida is a land-grant university with a medical school and teaching hospital in central campus. It partners with an extension program in every county of Florida which places us in a unique position to grow all aspects of Food = Medicine.
