Ketogenic Therapy

The ketogenic therapy is a high fat, low carbohydrate and adequate protein diet used to treat some epilepsy patients, mostly children. This diet seems to be an effective way to eliminate or reduce the amount of seizures in epilepsy patients.

The goal of the ketogenic therapy is to place patients in a state of ketosis to induce use of fatty acids as the body’s main source of fuel. Putting these patients in a state of ketosis seems to reduce or eliminate their seizures. This reduction in seizures might also allow the clinicians involved to wean the patients off of other anti-epileptic medications, some of which may cause adverse side effects.

Compliance with the therapy is sometimes challenging due to the large portions of fat and large amount of work put on the caregiver.  It becomes very difficult for the caregiver to keep their children on the strict regimen, and at times, the diet may fail.  This is why one of our goals is to provide caregiver with information about ketogenic therapy and ideas to make the diet easier on the families.
