As an active member of the Carnitine team I have participated in a piglet experiment. I became familiar with blood analysis, and organ collection during non-survival surgery. As part of the Assay Group I have started to analyze blood collected from patients in the Shands' GCRC. I am currently undergoing training to learn how to separate carnitine and acylcarnitines that come from both the piglet blood obtained during our experiments and the human blood samples that are collected from Shand's Clinical Research Center.

Project: Acylcarnitine Profiles of Healthy Young Adults on a Ketogenic Diet
I am a member of the hybrid group KetoCarn. In this group I have focused on ensuring that our methods of monitoring seizures through seizure scores is as objective and consistent as possible. I am also in the Carnitine Research Group (CRG) where we discuss topics of and approaches to our individual projects. My project deals with defining, using, and creating a carnitinome, or a complete acylcarnitine profile. Jessica and I are creating a carnitinome by performing assays on piglet plasma and helping to analyze information we receive from the mass spectrometer down at the Chemistry department. I hope to soon look at the acylcarnitine profiles of young healthy adults on a trial Ketogenic diet.

Project: Carnitine Compartmentalization in the Piglet
I am a member of the Carnitine Research Group (CRG) and Assay group. With CRG I am currently working on a project trying to understand the carnitine compartmentalization in piglet populations fed through total parenteral nutrition (TPN). My work with these populations deals with piglets that were raised either with or without carnitine supplementation. In the acylcarnitine/carnitinome group, I am currently working on training to begin assaying piglet blood and tissue samples to investigate their acylcarnitine profiles.

Project: Plasma Carnitinome of HIV Positive Pediatric Patients
I am currently a member of the HIV/Carn and Acylcarnitine groups. My role in the HIV/Carn group includes entering and auditing patient data in the Access database, and also serving as an Information Coordinator for the Gator team. These tasks ensure accurate collection of data as well as accurate transfer and input of data to be used for various personal projects. Within the Acylcarnitine group I assist in performing assays on blood and plasma collected from Ketogenic CRC patients in order to investigate their acylcarnitine profiles. I also work on a Carnitinome database in order to integrate information on acylcarnitines to be used in conjunction with the acylcarnitine profile data. These data will result in a personal project analyzing acylcarnitine values in the HIV positive pediatric population along various metabolic parameters.

Project: Development of a piglet model to study the effects of prematurity, hypoxia and hyperoxia
I am currently involved with the KetoCarn and CRG subgroups. With KetoCarn I am working with seizure and med scores in order to become more familiar with their scoring processes and to learn more about the Ketogenic therapy. My personal project involves the future of the piglet experiments the Carnitine team takes part in. I am working to develop a piglet seizure model so that we can better emulate the pediatric epileptic population. We will expose the piglets to periods of hypoxia and hyperoxia which will hopefully induce seizures throughout the experiment. Doing this will allow us to more effectively study the mechanisms behind the Ketogenic therapy and the role of carnitine. The goal is also to make the Ketogenic therapy more of a preventive medicine for premature babies and reduce the harmful effects seizures have on the immature brain. I am also working on improving the enterally fed formula we currently give our piglets and creating parenteral nutrition for our future hypoxic piglets.

Project: Fatty Acid Analysis on Patient Diet Recalls
I am currently focusing on various tasks within the InvestiGators. The first is to work with the other captains and the rest of the organization to maintain a cohesive group in order to enhance our productivity and success levels. The second is to train new members on such procedures as acycarnitine assays, following GCRC protocols and experiment preparation. As a member of Keto/Carn, I work in the ketotherapy subgroup where we focus on the completion of entering and auditing patients’ dietary recalls along with presenting and discussing scientific journal articles relating to the Ketogenic Therapy and/or carnitine metabolism. The data from the dietary recalls will then be used to receive in-depth information of the breakdown of nutrient intake which can be analyzed for individual members’ projects, including my own. As GCRC co-coordinator, I prepare for weekly trips down the Shands Medical Hospital where the carnitine team members receive blood from patients with epilepsy and prepare these samples for acylcarnitine assays.

As a member of the Carnitine Team, I have helped with the piglet experiment. Then I learned about the restrictions and complications of the Ketogenic Diet. While training, I have learned to do blood assays on piglets' blood samples, which will help better understanding the acylcarnitine levels in normal and ketogenic populations. I am also a member of the HIV/Carn group..
